Full Description

The Grange Club is a leading sports club based at 7 Portgower Place in the Stockbridge district of Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 1832 in Edinburgh's Grange district, the club moved to its current location at Raeburn Place (adjacent to Edinburgh Academy sports ground) in 1872. The clubhouse pavilion was built at a cost of £1,400 and officially opened on 29 June 1893 by Lord Moncrieff; it underwent a £450,000 restoration in 1998. The interior decorative scheme complements the exterior, and the Long Room is modelled on the Marylebone Cricket Club's Long Room at Lord's. After the Scottish Cricket Union disbanded in 1883, The Grange Club assumed responsibility as the governing body of cricket in Scotland for a time and still holds considerable national influence. The club is home to five main sports: cricket, hockey, squash, tennis, and padel. The Grange Cricket Club fields four weekend league sides: the 1st XI plays in the Cricket Scotland League Eastern Premiership, the 2nd XI in the Championship Division, and the 3rd and 4th XIs in East of Scotland League Divisions 4 and 8 respectively (the 4th XI was reinstated in 2025 due to membership growth). The club has a large junior section and recently re-established a women's team, actively seeking new members for 2026. The club is also home to Grange Dyvours (tennis, founded 1883), Grange Hockey Club (with seven men's teams and four women's teams), Grange Squash Club (over 200 members on five courts), and padel. The hockey club's 1st XI has played in Europe after winning the Scottish Cup and also competes in the Euro Hockey League. Uniquely for a private club in Scotland, The Grange hosts four grass tennis courts and four floodlit astroturf courts for The Dyvours Club. The Grange is the regular home of the Scotland national cricket team (tenant since 1999) and also hosts the Eastern Knights in the Regional Pro Series. It has a capacity of 5,000. The ground hosted two ODIs during the 1999 Cricket World Cup (Scotland v Bangladesh and Scotland v New Zealand). Notable international matches include Scotland's first official ODI outside a Cricket World Cup in 2006 (v Pakistan), Scotland v Australia in 2013, Scotland v England in 2018 (where Scotland beat England for the first time in any format), and many others. Fourteen ODI centuries and four ODI five-wicket hauls have been recorded on the ground, along with one T20I five-wicket haul. Facilities include a fully licensed bar and function rooms available for venue hire. The club is wheelchair accessible (wheelchair_accessible: true), has parking available, and is open daily 08:00–22:00. There are 15 Type 2 electric vehicle charging points (7 kW each, AC single-phase, 32A, 230V) operated by POD Point (UK), with usage cost described as a complicated tariff structure (0.45/kWh and 0.75/kWh). The club has a rating of 4.3 based on 168 user ratings. It is owned by The Grange Club and is an operational sports club (2013 primary type display name). The club has 650 adult members. The pavilion is a Category A listed building (list entry LB43497). Contact: phone +441313322148, email info@thegrangeclub.com, website www.thegrangeclub.com. Twitter handle @grangecc. The club is located in the City of Edinburgh Council area, postcode EH4 1HQ. The club insists on an inclusive entry policy, tolerance, courtesy, good manners, fairness, honesty and integrity, and is opposed to discrimination. It has a large junior section and expects senior members to act as role models. The club is seeking new members for 2026 and welcomes adults of all ages and standards, with a Director of Cricket (Craig Yelverton as of 2025). Members can join via the website, and venue hire is also available.
