The Dyvours Club, now known as The Grange Dyvours Club, is Edinburgh's oldest lawn tennis club. The origin of the club name comes from the 17th Century, when bankrupts in Scotland, known as 'Dyvours', wore clothes of various colours, particularly brown and yellow. The club founders co-opted the name and colours to represent that they intended to play on 'other people's grounds and eat other people's lunches', as stated by their first chairman, Lord Dunedin. The club began playing on ground next to The Grange Club in Stockbridge, which is the home of Scottish cricket. Initially, 'Real tennis' was played in a hut called the 'Tin Temple'. Sir James Patten McDougall KCB was one of the first to play 'Lawn tennis' outdoors at The Grange Club ground. The club initially enjoyed the use of ten grass courts, but two were requisitioned for the construction of The Grange Club's cricket pavilion in 1895, and two more were lost with the construction of squash courts in 1974. The club eventually became a fully lawn tennis club in 1902. In 1996, the name was changed to Grange Dyvours Lawn Tennis Club to reflect its long-standing association with The Grange Club. The club was home to the Scottish Lawn Tennis Championship from its founding in 1878 to 1892, returning for one year in 1994. It also plays in the East of Scotland leagues. The Grange Club is located at Portgower Place, Edinburgh, EH4 1HQ. The phone number is 0131 332 2148 and the general email is info@thegrangeclub.com.
