Full Description
Grange Dyvours Lawn Tennis Club, commonly known as The Dyvours Club, is the oldest lawn tennis club in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was founded in 1883 and is situated in the picturesque Stockbridge district of Edinburgh at Portgower Place, EH4 1HQ. The club is part of the historic Grange Club, which also houses hockey, cricket, and squash sections. The club boasts a unique set of facilities: four grass tennis courts (making it the only club in Scotland with grass courts), four floodlit all-weather tennis courts, two indoor tennis courts with a cushioned acrylic surface (similar to the Australian and US Open) that opened in winter 2024 and became available for bookings in 2025, and two covered padel courts that opened in 2024. All tennis courts can be booked online via the LTA ClubSpark system. To book, users must register for a free LTA account and can book courts up to seven days in advance. Upon booking, a PIN number is provided for access to the facilities. Padel rackets are available for use by the courts. Access to the club is available on a pay-to-play basis for the wider community, with peak and off-peak rates for tennis and padel. Club membership is also available for tennis, with a discounted rate for members. Padel membership is currently full and operates on a one-out, one-in basis, but pay-to-play is still open. For tennis membership inquiries, visit membership.thegrangeclub.com. The club has a strong competitive side, entering teams in the East of Scotland leagues across women's, men's, and junior categories. It also hosts mini-leagues, regular competitions, and social tennis for players of all standards. The club was the home of the Scottish Lawn Tennis Championship from 1878 to 1892 and hosted it again in 1994. Coaching is provided by Meston Performance Coaching, offering a wide range of programs for all ages and abilities. The club's partners include Dunlop and GPA. In 2025, Grange Dyvours was awarded Tennis Scotland Club of the Year 2025. The club has a rich history: the name 'Dyvours' originates from 17th-century Scots term for bankrupts, who wore brown and yellow clothing. The founders adopted the name and colours to signify that they played on others' grounds. Early play was real tennis in a hut called the 'Tin Temple' on ground next to The Grange Club. Over time, the club transitioned to lawn tennis, initially using ten grass courts. Two courts were lost when the cricket pavilion was built in 1895, and two more when squash courts were constructed in 1974. The club became a fully lawn tennis club in 1902. In 1996, the name changed to Grange Dyvours Lawn Tennis Club to reflect its long association with The Grange Club. Proposed indoor facility 'The Tin Temple Two' was drawn up in 2016, which eventually became the current indoor courts.
