About

If you're wandering through Newington and spot the floodlit artificial grass courts glowing in the dusk, that's Waverley Lawn Tennis, Squash and Sports Club – an Edinburgh institution since 1885. This is no ordinary sports club: four all-weather tennis courts, two traditional plaster-walled squash courts with a gallery, a professional snooker table, a darts board, a gym, and even a sauna. The real gem is the bar with a sunny viewing balcony overlooking the tennis action. Social tennis sessions run Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings – just show up with your racket. The Waverley Tennis Academy, run by Scott Tulloch and Juanfran Torres, offers coaching for all ages, from holiday camps for kids to private lessons for adults. Membership is flexible – tennis only, squash only, or both – and the place stays open until 11pm every day. Oh, and they've got 15 electric vehicle charging points, because they think of everything.
