About

If you're walking down St Andrew Square and spot a pair of grand Georgian buildings with a smart doorman, that's Gleneagles Townhouse. Behind the Grade A listed façade you'll find a brilliant hybrid: a 5-star hotel, a private members' club, and a stupendous all-day restaurant called The Spence with a soaring cupola ceiling. Head up to Lamplighters rooftop bar for cocktails with skyline views (members and hotel guests only), and don't miss the subterranean Strong Rooms wellness suite with its cryotherapy chamber and infrared sauna. Insider tip: book spa treatments weeks ahead—they vanish fast. The 33 rooms range from cosy attic Nooks to spacious Masters; the House rooms strike a lovely balance. The vibe is elegant yet energised, with staff who remember your name and genuinely care. Perfect for a luxe city break or a members' club night out.

Full Description

Gleneagles Townhouse is Gleneagles’ first city outpost, a Grade A listed Georgian gem at 39 St Andrew Square in the heart of Edinburgh. The hotel occupies two adjacent tall and grand buildings, one taller than the other, creating a higgledy-piggledy layout inside. It operates as a luxury hotel, all-day restaurant, rooftop bar, private members’ club, and wellness centre. There are 33 guestrooms embracing the noble building’s heritage, blending timeless character with contemporary comfort. Room categories include Nook (teensy attic spaces with low ceilings and dormer windows), House (mid-size), and Master (more space with expansive city views). All rooms are styled with approximately Victorian decor, Art Deco-ish flourishes, pastel-toned scalloped velvety shapes, and come with fluffy robes, slippers, Gleneagles bath products, fresh milk in the fridge, and brownie treats. The hotel offers an all-day restaurant and bar called The Spence, which is fabulous—the space is astonishing, all columns and cupola, the size of a cricket ground. Head chef Jonny Wright and sommelier Elizabeth Mellish deliver bistro-brasserie-superior dishes like beef tartare, roast chicken, biodynamic wines, and baked Alaska. Breakfast is bespoke, prepared to order from a menu. The rooftop bar, Lamplighters, overseen by Stef Anderson, is a bijou treasure with an epic roof terrace serving classic cocktails with vast views over the city, though the roof terrace is for members and hotel guests only and sometimes reserved for private functions. The first-floor members-only lounge, the Note Burning Room, is the loveliest room in the entire place but not accessible to non-member overnight guests. The Strong Rooms wellness centre is a sanctuary of state-of-the-art tech and tailored experiences, including a cryotherapy chamber, infrared sauna, Technogym equipment, and over 40 classes. Spa treatments are available but book up quickly. The hotel has an electric vehicle charging station with 15 Type 2 (Socket Only) 7 kW Level 2 chargers, installed at St James Square site. Parking is available at around £28 per night. Wi-Fi is free and fast. Pets are allowed. Wheelchair access is good: all areas accessible via wheelchair-accessible entrance and lift, two accessible bedrooms, and accessible bathrooms in main lobby, basement wellness, and Lamplighters bar. The hotel is dog-friendly, allergy-friendly with allergy-free rooms, blackout curtains, air conditioning, cable/satellite TV, walk-in showers, and a business center. Online booking is available. The general manager is Ewan Grant. The property has a 4.5-star rating on Google with 366 reviews, and a 4.1-star rating on Tripadvisor with 121 reviews, ranked #128 of 171 hotels in Edinburgh. Price range is $485-$1,342 per night. The building has been beautifully refurbished over four and a half years with improvements to energy efficiency, locally sourced produce, and sustainable practices. In-room recycling bins are provided. The hotel offers three adjoining rooms for families, cots available, fun presents for children on arrival, and a special kids' menu in The Spence. The concierge can arrange private tours of the Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh Castle, Johnnie Walker Experience, Jupiter Artland, and personal shopping. The hotel is located within walking distance of 354 restaurants and 190 attractions. Nearby highlights include Dean Village (calm walk along Water of Leith), Lannan Bakery (buttery pastries), Little Capo (Italian-ish gem with orange façade), The Milkman (speciality espresso in Old Town closes), Panda and Sons (speakeasy behind a barbershop), and The Gently Mad (characterful bookshop). St Andrew Square is a picture with a newly added plaque explaining the controversial Melville Monument. The hotel is 6.6 miles from Turnhouse Airport and 35.2 miles from Dundee Airport.
