About
If you're driving out to Heriot-Watt's Riccarton campus, you'll spot the gleaming Oriam Indoor Tennis Centre sitting proudly within Scotland's national sports performance hub – and trust me, this place is a game-changer for Edinburgh tennis. The six brand-new acrylic courts are some of the finest in the country, flooded with natural light and buzzing with energy from mini red-ball sessions for three-year-olds right through to high-performance training. Danny Curtis, the tennis manager with over 25 years of coaching savvy, runs a brilliantly structured programme – the kids' classes are particularly wonderful for building motor skills, and the adult social sessions have a friendly, community feel that's hard to beat. Insider tip: book your court up to 14 days in advance on the Oriam app (members get 20% off pay-as-you-play), and don't forget you can hire rackets and balls if you're caught without.

Full Description
Oriam Indoor Tennis Centre is a purpose-built, six-court indoor tennis facility located on the Heriot-Watt University Riccarton campus in Edinburgh, postcode EH14 4AS. It opened in February 2024 after an 18-month construction period that began in September 2022, funded by a £4.5 million investment from Oriam, Heriot-Watt University, the LTA, the LTA Tennis Foundation, sportscotland, and Tennis Scotland through the Transforming Scottish Indoor Tennis (TSIT) fund. The centre is part of Oriam, Scotland's Sport Performance Centre, and was built to replace three outdoor courts that were removed when Oriam was constructed in 2016. The courts feature state-of-the-art acrylic playing surfaces designed for both recreational and competitive matches, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. Oriam Indoor Tennis Centre offers pay-as-you-play court bookings, racket and ball hire, and a full programme of classes: Minis and Juniors Tennis for ages 3–18, Teen Tennis, and Adult Tennis Classes for all ability levels, as well as performance coaching. Danny Curtis, the Tennis Manager with over 25 years of coaching experience, leads the delivery of an excellent kids and community programme. The centre is open seven days a week: Monday–Friday 6:30am–10pm, Saturday 8am–8pm, and Sunday 8am–10pm. Courts can be booked up to 14 days in advance online via the Oriam website, through the Oriam App, or at the reception desk. Oriam members receive a 20% discount on all pay-as-you-play tennis bookings. Membership to Oriam is not required to play; the facility is open to all. During its first year of operation, the centre recorded approximately 3,252 hours on court, an average of 325 weekly participants, and 68 weekly classes by the end of Year 1. The Heriot-Watt Tennis Club, which returned to train and compete on campus, grew by over 50% to 140 members. Tennis Scotland hosted 34 competition days and 47 coach education days at the facility. The courts are also used by the Scottish Rugby Union, the Scottish Football Association, and Heart of Midlothian F.C. for first-team training and academy sessions, as well as by Scottish national performance programmes. Additional amenities within the broader Oriam complex include a fitness suite, sports halls, squash courts, synthetic pitches, studios, a performance wing, conference facilities, a cafe, and a clinic offering physiotherapy, sports massage, hydrotherapy, injury rehabilitation, isokinetic testing, and sport and health testing services. Parking is available with free and paid parking lots and free street parking. The site also features 15 Type 2 electric vehicle charging points (7kW each) operated by POD Point. The centre accepts credit cards, debit cards, and NFC payments. A tennis newsletter is available for the latest news and offers. The facility is rated 4.7 out of 5 by users (688 ratings) and is described as a community hub for tennis in West Edinburgh, Midlothian, West Lothian, and Fife.
