Oriam Indoor Tennis Centre is a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility located at the Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh Campus in Currie, Edinburgh (EH14 4AS, UK). The centre was inaugurated in February 2024, following 18 months of construction that began in September 2022. It was funded through a £4.5 million partnership involving Oriam, Heriot-Watt University, the LTA, LTA Tennis Foundation, sportscotland, and Tennis Scotland, via the Transforming Scottish Indoor Tennis (TSIT) fund. This development fulfills a commitment made when three tennis courts were removed in 2016 for the construction of the main Oriam building. The facility boasts six brand new indoor tennis courts featuring some of the finest acrylic playing surfaces in the country, suitable for both recreational and competitive matches. Oriam Indoor Tennis Centre is part of Oriam, Scotland's Sport Performance Centre, which also includes sports halls, synthetic pitches, squash courts, a fitness suite, studio space, a performance wing, conference facilities, and a cafe. A wide range of activities are available, including tennis court bookings, Minis and Juniors tennis classes for ages 3-18, and adult tennis classes for all ability levels. Other racquet sports offered are squash, badminton, pickleball, and table tennis. Team sports such as football, cricket, futsal, basketball, and netball are also supported. The centre provides gym and fitness facilities, including exercise classes and personal training. Additional services include a clinic offering physiotherapy, sports massage, hydrotherapy, injury rehabilitation, isokinetic testing, and sport and health testing (performance testing and analysis, health services, nutrition and metabolism services). Kids activities, cycling, and walking sports are also available. The centre operates from 6:30am to 10:00pm Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 8:00pm on Saturdays, and 8:00am to 10:00pm on Sundays. It is wheelchair accessible and offers parking, including free and paid lots, as well as free street parking. The centre has a high user rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 688 reviews. Access to the tennis courts is primarily on a "pay-as-you-play" (PAYP) basis, meaning membership is not required to book a court. However, Oriam members receive a 20% discount on all PAYP tennis bookings. Courts can be booked up to 14 days in advance online, via the Oriam App, or at the reception desk. The centre serves a diverse community, including students, partners, the general public, and national performance programmes for tennis (pros and juniors). It is also utilized as a training facility by the Scottish Rugby Union, Scottish Football Association, and Heart of Midlothian F.C. for their first-team training and academy. In its first year (since February 2024), the tennis programme welcomed over 300 regular participants, with weekly sessions doubling to 68. The Heriot-Watt Tennis Club, based at the centre, saw its membership grow by over 50% to 140. In partnership with Tennis Scotland, the centre recorded 3,947 hours of booked court time, 34 competition days, and 47 coach education days. The facility also provides EV charging points operated by POD Point (UK), with 7 Type 2 (Socket Only) connections, each delivering 7kW AC (Single-Phase) at 230V and 32A. These charging points are located at the St James Square site at Quarter, Edinburgh, and have a complicated tariff structure of £0.45/kWh and £0.75/kWh, with public access requiring membership to the charging service.
